Both Senate and House versions of a bill to ban healthcare providers from performing gender-altering treatment on minors took steps toward becoming law. The bill passed easily in the Senate Judiciary Committee and the House Health Committee last week.

The bill prohibits healthcare providers from performing gender altering treatments on minors and sets up a process for reporting violations to the Tennessee Attorney General.  It also allows parents of a person who commits suicide up to 30 years after receiving such treatments as a minor the ability to sue the physician.

When asked for a comment, District 24 Represenative, Kevin Raper, told WCLE about the bill: “As a former educator, current parent, and a person trying to protect child dignity, I will be voting for HB1 which bans the administering of sex changes until a person has reached the age of 18.”

A vote in the full Senate is scheduled for Monday while the House Civil Justice Committee will consider the bill on Wednesday.
